Art Quilt Collage:
A Creative Journey in Fabric, Paint, & Stitch
revised 2nd edition
I am thrilled that Art Quilt Collage: A Creative Journey in Fabric, Paint, and Stitch — the updated 2nd edition — is out in the world! It’s so amazing and exciting that people continue to be interested in making original art with fabric and stitch.
Lots of folks have asked what makes it an “updated 2nd edition.” Great question! Honestly, there’s something new on every single page but…
Here are the top five updates you’re going to love.
1) New Artwork!
Each chapter opens with an art quilt collage that exemplifies the ideas, materials and techniques in the chapter. These featured art quilts are different from the examples in the first edition. I’ve made lots of work in the past ten years and it was really fun to chose which pieced to highlight. Plus there are many other examples throughout the book of art quilts that were not in the first edition.
My art quilt collage, Dusk Breeze, is the featured piece for the Inspiration and Fabric Selection chapter.
2) Process Gallery
In my years of teaching and posting on social media, I know people are always interested in process photos and stories about all the tiny (and huge!) decisions that are made throughout the creative process. We added a Process Gallery which features tons of step-by-step pictures from the creation of five different quilts. You’ll see exactly where I started and how the finished piece came together.
The Process Gallery includes five different quilts. On the first page you can see the fabric selection, fused composition and stitching for Upholding.
3) Student Work
The Eight Design Guides were one of the most popular parts of the first edition. The workshop I teach based on these ideas is one of my most popular. I am thrilled to highlight work from six artists who took my workshop and created their own original compositions based on the Eight Design Guides. It is so fascinating to see the different interpretations and to identify how each artist put her own creative voice into the same format.
On the left are Sonja Hagen’s examples of the Eight Design Guides. On the right are four examples of the Landscape and Grid Design Guides. I love seeing all these different examples and possibilities.
4) Expanded Demos
In my many years of teaching, I know exactly which techniques and demos really connect with students as ideas they are eager to take back to their own creative practices. I’ve highlighted a few with step-by-step photos and full explanations including hot glue stencils, parchment paper transfer design and fused bindings.
I love the big, close-up photos of this Parchment Paper transfer demo.
5) More Inspiring Ideas
This book is not just about materials and techniques. It’s about how creativity enriches our life. It’s about storytelling, personal expression, making meaning and embracing originality. With that in mind, I’ve sprinkled my own experiences and images throughout the book. Many of these come from the creative growth I’ve experienced since the original publication.
These snapshots are in the “supplies” chapter because gathering inspiration from your experiences is an important way to stock your creative toolbox.
Whether you’ve had the original edition on your shelf since 2016, or you’re brand new to art quilt collage and my artwork, I know you’re going to find something inspiring in the new edition!
