Meet Deborah Boschert

Artist, Author & Teacher

Simple black and white line drawing of three plant stems with leaves at the top, varying in height.

I make art quilt collages with layers of fabric, paint and stitch. They make a bold visual impact from across the room and offer intimate details up close — and I teach the creative process behind them.

I’ve always loved creating.

As a kid in the 1980’s I loved making Shrinky-Dinks, latch hook rugs and beaded friendship pins. I come from a family of makers. Great Grandma Mabel was a weaver, Grandma Jean knit sweaters, Dad made needlepoint book covers and Mom was an amazing garment maker. I found my way to quilting in 1997 when I made a pieced bed quilt from a pattern. I took a raw edge fused appliqué workshop in 2004 and that was the start of developing my creative voice by layering fabric, paint and stitch to create what I call art quilt collages.

My artwork often includes personal symbols like ladders, chairs and bowls. The shapes, compositions, lines and textures in my work act as metaphors for ideas and themes that are interesting to me. The creative process is like having a conversation with myself about things that are important to me, my place in the world and the way I want to connect with others.

Sharing my artwork

It’s always a delight to share my art quilt collages. They’ve been in many exhibitions and even featured as a mural in the Dallas Arts District. Another way I share my art is through teaching. The workshop setting is where we really connect and discovery the potential of making art with fabric and stitch.

I’ve taught at venues all over the world to all kinds of different makers. I strive to provide students with both structure and creative flexibility. I love it when students reconnect with me after taking a workshop to tell me what a significant impact it had on their creative lives. Those are beautiful, intimate moments sharing an understanding of the power of art in our lives.

Highlights

A woman in a red dress stands in front of a colorful mural with her arms raised, smiling. The mural features a large yellow sun, blue sky with clouds, green hills, and numerous red birds flying across the sky, in a stylized, abstract pattern.

Outside of the studio

I live in Lewisville, Texas which is a suburb of Dallas. I share my life with my husband, Jeff. Our partnership is my greatest delight. We’re grateful that our two kids live near by and come over for dinner often. I’m in awe of the way they see and move through the world. When I’m not in the studio, I love to travel, do crossword puzzles, practice yoga, eat tacos and listen to podcasts.
