Laying Fabric, Paint and Stitch
I think of it as the tenth-anniversary edition since the original came out in 2016! When I first began writing about layering fabric, paint and stitch, I had no idea of the enduring interest it would generate and how many people would continue to explore these materials and techniques.
So many creative folks are still interested in these ideas that C&T Publishing and I decided to publish a second edition.
Looking Back
In the ten years since the first edition was published, I’ve been honored to teach workshops in a wide range of settings and to lots of different folks. I’ve visited quilt guilds, large conventions, and rural retreats. Some folks come to my workshops with a background in traditional quilting. Some are longtime explorers of mixed media. My virtual workshops have been full of folks in their own creative spaces who willingly share their art and ideas through computer screens. I’m honored and thankful for connections made in all these settings.
What’s New
We’ve kept the bones and structure of the book; it made sense then, and it’s still the logical format for sharing these ideas. But this time around, it’s full of updates and fantastic contributions from students.
A few techniques often seem to inspire “lightbulb moments” in my workshops. I’ve highlighted and enhanced those sections. I’ve also sprinkled a few tricks and tips from my own creative practice throughout this new edition.
The biggest update is all the new artwork: You’ll get to see what’s been happening in my studio over the last ten years. It’s been so fun to use these new works as examples for each step in the creative process.
