Techniques with Paint and Patterns Workshop

Simple techniques and supplies, stupendous results! Cut freezer paper stencils, create foam stamps, print with found objects and make marks with pen and ink! We’ll talk about shapes, pattern, repetition, and color. Students will leave with a beautiful stash of original fabrics ready to be used in art quilts, collage or mixed media.

Supplies

Depending on the length of the workshop and how fast you work, you may need slightly more or less of the supplies recommended.

Several of these supplies are listed in my Amazon shop. You don’t have to buy from here, but it’s a good resource to consider.

  • 4-10 fat quarters solid color cotton fabric — Choose colors you love and include both darks and lights. Feel free to bring more, especially if you work quickly.

  • piece of felt or batting approximately 18x22 inches

  • fabric pen — I like black Micron by Pigma in the 08 size, feel free to bring other colors or brands.

  • four to six small bottles acrylic craft paint (or textile paint) — Bring colors that coordinate with your fabric colors and include lights and darks. Black and white are always good. I like Folk Art brand from Michaels.

  • 3 - 6 spouncers (foam brushes, sometimes called pouncers or stencil brushes)

  • two or three “found objects” for printing — Consider small toys, kitchen utensils, empty spools, items from your recycling bin. Anything with a texture or pattern that might be interesting.

  • three empty toilet paper tubes

  • 4 - 5 paper plates for paint palettes

  • 2 or 3 pieces of foam core approximately 4x4” — These will be used as mounts for foam stamps. Recycled styrofoam or heavy cardboard are also fine.

  • one or two sheets sticky-backed fun foam — If we’re in person, I’ll have some to purchase at the workshop.

  • freezer paper — one yard is plenty

  • scissors — small and large

  • iron and ironing board

  • sketchbook, pen and pencil

  • container for water

  • paper towels for clean up

  • plastic to cover workspace, a garbage bag works fine
