Encrusted Cairn, 28" x 17", 2005

I’m entranced by the smoothness of river rocks. I also loved encountering cairns (stacks of rocks used to mark trails) while hiking in Maine. Using handpainted fabric, I was able to create piles of shapes that looked like stones. I stacked them in lines and paired them with a stark black background and winding quilting lines. The embellishments make me think of the treasures you might find buried in the earth.
